SHIRE MARE REGISTRATIONS INCREASE BY 12% IN 2001 SHS STUDBOOK!
August 15, 2002 -- WHILE THE HEADLINES OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS WERE SHIRE MARE NUMBERS DROP AND DROP AGAIN; 2001 SHS mare registrations totaled 249 fillies. However, before we throw a party, it needs to be realized the 12% increase amounts to 27 fillies.
In the past 20 years, only 4 years have had fewer mare registrations. Those years were 1982 when there were 241 mares entered and more recently in 1995 with 244, 1999 with 229 and 2000 with 222.
Several other observations to consider: there were a total of 1624 mares registered with the SHS between 1987 and 1991. This was a modern all-time high period. However, of those 1624 mares, only 69 registered a filly in 2001.
Also, of the 249 mares entered in the 2001 SHS studbook, a total of 90 reside outside of England and 35 of the 249 mares entered were born in years previous to 2001. The 2001 SHS studbook also indicates there were 53 registered mares exported in 2001. Additionally, of the 249 fillies entered in the 2001 SHS studbook, 66 were from dams registering their first filly foal.
While I hope it is not the case I continue to suspect, as the result of the FMD in the UK in 2001, 2002 registrations may considerably fewer than previous years.
In closing, taking into consideration the 300+ mares registered each year from 1987 through 1991, there may be a 400 to 500 decrease in total Shire mare numbers over the next 5 years.
